Kyrgyzstan in different seasons is very interesting.
Climate of Kyrgyzstan is quite pleasant, with four clearly degenerated seasons. Winters are cold and snowy, especially at higher elevations; summers are warm and sunny, sometimes very hot at low altitudes, but cooler in mountains. Spring can extend from March - May, summer from May - September, autumn from September to December sometimes, and winter from December - February. Temperature varies immensely according to altitude.
Winter
In Kyrgyzstan the average winter air temperature is + 1 °C (34 °F). The first frosts begin usually in the middle of December and end in the second half of February. The coldest month of the year is January (min average temperature -10 °C). The higher it is the colder it is here. Heavy snowfalls are typical for highlands and there are no much precipitations in the lowlands. During winter months most rural accommodations are closed, trekking areas, mountain roads and passes are inaccessible. However, this is a great season for skiing and winter sports. However, if you like extreme and prefer to travel in winter, the perfect destination in Kyrgyzstan for winter tours is the largest resort located near the town of Karakol in the Tian Shan Mountains, where you can ski at any altitude. The highest skiing point is 3040 m. The elevation is 800 m, the minimum gradient is 7%, and the maximum gradient makes up 53%.
Spring
Spring is generally mild, with the first hot days coming in May. The thaw begins in March and most of the rain falls in April and May, when many areas of Kyrgyzstan face the threat of flood, mainly from snowmelt. Therefore, heavy rainfall makes rural tracks still impassable. The average spring air temperature is + 16 °C (60 °F). Spring is the season of new beginnings when fresh buds bloom, animals awaken and the earth seems to come to life again. Farmers and gardeners plant their seeds and temperatures slowly rise. The timing of these changes varies depending upon location, as for mountainous areas it happens later. Spring is a good period for photo tours in Kyrgyzstan. During a travel it is possible to see huge fields of beautiful wild flowers covered the countryside in different colors, people and tractors work in the fields, peaks are still covered with snow and all this altogether makes a remarkable background. Local people prepare for the summer season, establish yurt camps, shepherds and their families move up to the mountains for summer pastures with their livestock. The main mountain roads of Kyrgyzstan are already open in May but it is still dangerous as late snowfall can mean many passes and even parts of the main highway are under snow until mid-May. These months have the highest amount of rainfall, and this, coupled with melting snow, can sometimes pose risks of landslides and avalanches.
Summer
It is warm during summer and the temperature will rise above 35 °C (95°F), on some days, though temperatures can soar even higher, as high as 45° C (113° F). In the mountains, it remains considerably cooler, depending on the altitude the temperature can go down to around freezing even in summer. At high altitudes, you can even feel all four seasons in Kyrgyzstan during just one day. Summer months are the best period to explore Kyrgyzstan.
All the roads in Kyrgyzstan are open to the glaciers, mountain lakes, pastures and up to the panoramic peaks. It is an ideal time for exploring nomads and Kyrgyz nature while staying in nomadic dwellings - yurts. It is a season for horseback riding, trekking, hiking as well as swimming not only in the large alpine Issyk Kul Lake but in many other small and big mountain lakes. However, there are a lot of tours accommodations are heavily booked, so you should to think about your travel in Kyrgyzstan during summer period beforehand.
Autumn
September is the moth of autumn but the weather is still like in summer. It is a perfect time to travel in Kyrgyzstan if you do not like hot weather and crowded sites. Mountain gorges are especially beautiful during this season. The trees are turning into yellow, orange and red but fir trees are still green. The tops of mountains are covering with white snow and this combination gives amazing feeling. The average temperature in autumn is + 16 °C (60 °F). The average minimum temperature is + 3 °C (37.5 °F). And of cause the higher it is the colder is the fall.
This is a good period for photo tours. Huge yellow fields covered the countryside in different colors, people and tractors work in the fields, white snow peaks and all this altogether makes a remarkable background. In November the weather gets colder and rainy. Many roads are already closed.
