For about seven hundred years traditional clothing has remained unchanged in Kyrgyzstan. They are considered to be the main part of material and spiritual life of people. All types reflect the social, marital status and age of the people. The main condition is adaptability to nomad life conditions.
Clothes consist of underwear and outwear, some types of pants for men are leather or suede - "jarq shym", "kandagay", "chalbar". Warriors and rich people were allowed to wear such trousers. "Ichik" are coats made of fur to wear in winters, and Kyrgyz people have always preferred to wear fur of wild animals, like wolf, fox, lynx. The type of ancient shoes for men was ankle boots Chokoy and Charyk, the hats tebetey, kalpak and malakai.
Female wore also underwear and outwear, the unique skirt is "beldemchi". Hats were decorated with bird's feathers, ornaments from silver, pearls, corals, and other stones. A long-sleeved jacket was to wear over the dress, namely "chyptama". In the winter women wore fur coats "ichik" as well.
