The peak Lenin is of the form of a high armchair, is located in the Osh region, in Kyrgyzstan and borders Tajikistan. The peak is 7134 m at height and is said to be the third highest mountain in the former Soviet Union. The top is always covered in clouds and it is difficult to see the outline of it. The peak has a pyramid form with a big base - the northern slope is rather steep. The peak was found and mapped by the famous Russian explorer of Central Asia A.P. Fedchanko, during his journey to the Northern Pamir in 1871. A.P. Fedchanko is the first to make reliable information about the geography of the Pamir Mountains. As for the name of it, first named Peak Kaufman, after Russian Governor General, then it was renamed in Honor of the Soviet leader, and has been renamed Kuh-I-Gamo or Warm Mountains. The expeditions over the slopes and hills were made in 1929, when only two people survived and considered it could have been better to start climbing the Zaalaiskii range located. After five years there was made the second expedition of professionals from the Soviet Red Army. After two attempts of summiting, they erected a statue of Lenin. They left a note saying that the first ascent from the North face was made by three men on 8th of September in 1934.
The other well-known climbing was in 1967 made by 301 people, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the former Soviet Union. Out of these people, 20 were women, 60 were foreigners. In the result of this tour in nowadays Kyrgyzstan, four new paths have been discovered; the Southeast is the most difficult of all. Now there are 16 routes to reach the summit. The mountain has the reputation of the high-altitude easy climbs.
Despite lucky summits, lots of experienced climbers have died in the result of weather circumstances. In 1974 the women team was caught by the storm, and it was the scene for documenting the tragedy. In 1991 an earthquake happened and 44 climbers have fallen below the snows, the only one survived and the only body was found. The main base camp is Achik Tash near the Wild Onion Field, or Lukovaya Polyana, the last one which is green before stony mountain slopes start.
