Eagle hunting in Kyrgyzstan
Previously there was the practice of eagle hunting around 12th and 13th centuries, when a sound eagle and a good horse were of the same price bringing great respect to the owner. The one who domesticates and trains the eagle is called berkutchi. Being in a tour you will meet berkutchi; you will have an opportunity to watch the process of hunting. The eagle owners - berkutchi - have been always greatly respected in Kyrgyzstan, as they always provided the whole village with meat and fur. Eagle hunting in Kyrgyzstan was the part of usual life of Kyrgyz people, as the kind of competition to demonstrate abilities and knowledge. The fact is that no everyone can become a berkutchi, as the skill of eagle training were going from generation to generation, and rich people could afford it. Breath-taking mountains are the place of living of golden eagles, the name of which are going from golden feathers at the back of head. While travelling you may see these birds floating through the heavens. The berkut can hunt hares, foxes and lynxes. Female berkuts are bigger and hunt wolves. These birds live approximately 40-50 years, must be caught young and trained by the only person for 3-4 years. After 20 years of being trained by the person the female is released to nature to find a male and nest. The pairs of eagles stay forever together. The season of hunting starts in October and lasts for 4 months, hunting may be made also by hawks and falcons.
